A few days ago, I hosted a workshop for a group of bright interns at our office. With graduation on the horizon, these young individuals were eager to explore the concept of ownership in the workplace.

Gathered in a room filled with anticipation, we discussed a fundamental yet often overlooked aspect of professional life: ownership. Many founders and business owners worry about the lack of ownership in their teams.

 

Cultivating Ownership at Home

This observation made me realise that addressing this issue early, especially with those about to enter the workforce, is crucial. Our session took on new significance as we aimed to equip these interns with the tools and mindset necessary to embrace ownership in their future careers.

During our conversation, one intern made a profound statement: “Ownership is a feeling.” It means feeling a sense of responsibility and connection to one’s work. To illustrate, I shared a personal story.

When we are kids, our parents often ask us to do certain chores at home. We do them out of obligation, feeling pressured. But as we grow older, we start doing these tasks on our own, without being instructed. This shift from external pressure to internal drive is ownership. Similarly, at work, ownership means taking charge of your tasks and projects proactively.

Ownership is not solely the responsibility of employees. Organisations play a vital role in fostering an environment that encourages it. This involves delegating responsibilities, establishing accountability practices, and, most importantly, building trust.
